Our Heritage The history of Islanders and IslandSurf.com begins on the white sand beaches of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, way back in the year 1980. With a love for the beach, the waves, and surfing culture, Islanders mission was simple: To promote beach lifestyles while providing the highest quality surfing apparel, accessories, and products through top quality customer service. In the late 90s, Islanders expanded to feature two stores full of local flavor on Okaloosa Island and Pensacola Beach, Florida. When the new millennium approached, Islanders quickly realized that the demand for beach lifestyle products had outgrown the white sand beaches of Florida. IslandSurf.com was then born and has now been surfing the waves of cyberspace since 2000. Our Islanders stores, as well as the IslandSurf.com team, remain on the beaches of Florida living the beach lifestyle - wearing, testing, and loving the beach apparel, surf gear, and sandals that we bring to you both online and in our stores. Our Stores... Islanders is lucky enough to call the beach home. With two locations on the white sand beaches of Northwest Florida, Islanders attracts locals and tourists with our Island-Style service and products inspired by the love of surf and sand. We are proud to offer surf board, boogie board, and skim board rentals, as well as a laid back, surf-inspired shopping experience. The stores are located on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Pensacola Beach, Florida directly on the beautiful Emerald Coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Islanders store on Okaloosa Island also includes the Corporate Office of IslandSurf.com. Our Environment 1% for the planet IslandSurf has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. Islanders is proud to be a member of 1% for the planet. 1% for the Planet exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Simply put its sole purpose is encouraging businesses to give back to the environment. 1% sprouted from the same soil as Patagonia, a peer we deeply respect. It started in 2001 with the goal of encouraging businesses to donate a portion of their sales to environmental groups. Since their first meeting, they have grown their membership to over 1100 businesses. 1% of all of Islanders annual sales (not just profits) is pledged to environmental organizations each year. 1% FTP is a powerful way for businesses to help drive positive environmental change, gain recognition for their responsibility, and promote further action on the part of consumers and other companies. At IslandSurf we believe that because of us, our oceans, rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, deserts and lowlands are healthier and better protected every day. We are tremendously excited to be a part of 1% For The Planet in support of efforts by non-profit organizations to protect and promote the wellness of this one great Earth. Going Green Flushing efficiently The EPA estimates that flushing your toilet makes up 30 percent of a household's water use (about three to six gallons per flush!!!). Placing a brick or a full water bottle in your toilet tank will help to conserve the amount of water used during each flush. Toilets know when to stop filling with water once the water reaches a certain level. By displacing that water with an object, you reduce the actual amount of water needed to tell the toilet it's ready for action. Here at IslandSurf, we have bricks in all of our toilets!!!! It sounds silly to say, but it is one of our favorite stories about some of the small things we do to go Green. Become a biker Biking is an excellent form of eco-friendly transportation - good for both you and the planet. Our founder and CEO, rides his bike to work regularly. Some of our employees even walk to work. If you have to drive, keep other cars off the road by carpooling. Conserve Energy We try to conserve energy whenever possible. We power down our equipment when we are not using it. We also have programmable thermostats at our stores and at our corporate office which allows us to cut back on our energy costs when we are not in the office. We recycle We separate our trash. Our bottles, paper, cardboard, etc. Paper is one of the most versatile and important materials used in homes, schools, offices, and businesses throughout the world. Here at IslandSurf we make paper recycling part of our everyday work environment. We constantly do things electronically whenever possible. 'We Work digitally' We share documents electronically and use collaborative software like Google Docs. We DO NOT print out emails, and we refrain from printing paper documents. When we have to print something, that document, is later used again for another task, whether we print on the other side or use it for scratch paper it is used, and reused again. We make all of our reports and data available online, therefore eliminating the need to print reports during meetings. Kill the fax We gave killed our fax, literally. Electronic documents are more flexible, easier to send and easier to read than faxes. Any fax we do get goes into an electronic email, and is reviewed on the computer. You'll use less paper and less energy in the process. Try it!! Each time you reach for a piece of paper, THINK! You can make a difference. All of our cardboard is broken down and recycled. Any box that comes through the door is broken down and taken to a local recycling center. Beach Clean-up Days Employees, friends, local schools, military personnel, and other community members come together to participate in our Beach clean-up days here on the Emerald Coast.
